4th Concentration Piece
My concentration is an exploration of the abstraction of rocks and minerals. I use texture and color to emphasis the art. I really like this painting but I cannot get past the yellow sperm in the middle of the painting. I am definitely going to go back and change that.

Three Artists of Interest
Ross Van Gogh
http://www.rossvangogh.co.uk/
The underlying idea in his work has kind of a comical edge to it. At the same time, he does amazing oil paintings with intense detail (the one of the mouth is real... what?).
He uses precise details and small symbols to shock the viewer.
I see a lot of emphasis in his work, which he uses to make a point and force you to notice what he wants you to notice. The emphasis in his paintings can sometimes be subtle, and then all of a sudden very intense.

Henrik Uldalen
http://henrikaau.com/
I believe that Uldalen's underlying idea has to do with looking at the world with your eyes closed. He does a lot of rough portraits of people with their eyes closed. He also does painting of people in the water which I find insane. I love paintings of people in water, but that is just me.
The artist uses texture and negative space to set the mood in his paintings. The color palate makes me feel calm and tranquil which I think is what he was going for.
I see him using texture, space, and emphasis. He uses space in all of this portraits which really provides good emphasis in the paintings.

Cristina Troufa

The underlying idea in her work is the idea of negative space.
She uses vibrant colors on the skin of the people to make up for the lack of color anywhere else in the paintings.
I see space, emphasis and line in her pieces. I think the way she decides which space is important and which isn't makes her paintings truly beautiful.

Back to Business
So doing a drawing portfolio instead of a photography portfolio could be described as a completely different yet all the same stressful experience. I got a canvas about a day into summer with the determination to paint a giraffe. I then stalled, procrastinated, and fooled around for basically all of June, July and half of August. Then panic started to set in. I finished my last 7 pieces over the course of two days. I enjoyed doing a drawing portfolio but I had a hard time with just doodling. It's odd but I have a problem with every art piece I do that I want to make it huge, colorful, intense to the point of it literally opening people's jaws. So when it comes to doodling and doing simple line drawings, it's basically impossible to shock someone with a little sketch. I also have a problem of centering my paintings which is quite obvious. I also painted on my best friends naked body which was kind of awesome and I really like how it turned out. I was kind of skeptical at first because I had to use crayons washable finger paint, but I think it came together well.

Dear future AP 2-D student,
I would strongly recommend choosing a concentration that you are passionate about from example, something with substance or hidden meaning that resonates with you. Otherwise, when you hit the wall of frustration that hits around piece 11, you are going to have no will whatsoever to continue. I would also recommend not waiting to the last minute to do paintings. The best feeling in art class, is coming to a critique with two pieces that a you spent time on and are proud of. Also using class time helps minimize the amount of work you have to do at home when all you feel like doing is sleeping.
Sincerely, Kelsey

What is the central idea of your concentration?
The central idea of my concentration is a focus on lips and mouths with an emphasis on color and texture.
How does the work in your concentration demonstrate the exploration of your idea? You may refer to specific images as examples. When referencing specific images, please indicate the image numbers.
My pieces are all paintings of lips deconstructed and put back together or multiplied.

My concentration is distorting lips/mouths with an emphasis on texture. At this point I feel like I need to go back to at least half of my paintings and add more to them. I feel like I am going to go in the direction of making the lips kind of creepy and layering in more texture. I want to start to use different color palettes like cool colors instead of warm. At this point I'm kind of uneasy because I really just want to go back and change a lot of my paintings to make them look more developed.
This one is not my least favorite but all of my paintings are at school so I couldn't take a picture of them. My least favorite would be my smallest one of someone screaming with a purple background. With this painting though, I hate the colors that I used. I want to go back in and put some dark purples and blues into the lips. Do you think that would be a mistake?
